WAIT UP
. . . canโt wait up no more . . .
Following on the heels of the acclaimed pandemic-themed ballad FEAR, modern poet รฉlectronique, Mhic is excited to launch the first single from her forthcoming fall EP, GLOW. In GLOW, Mhic explores the themes of healing, identity, voice, and the soundscape of this emotional journey.
The new single, Wait Up, was written across a span of eight months, and chronicles the final throes of a toxic relationship that engulfed Mhic and paralyzed her from pursuing the art that continually called to her. Mhic says, โWhile my pain was deeply personal, I believe that everyone can relate to being lost in someoneโs shadow, waiting and wanting to be seen,โ and this lyrical thread runs throughout Wait Up.
Like all Mhicโs work, Wait Up celebrates the poetry of noise that is rapidly becoming her signature sound. Wait Up burst into the world as a simple drumbeat, inspired by early Peter Gabriel, combining world and electronic sound. And then that drumbeat waitedโฆ.waited for the catalyst that would evolve it into something new and different.
According to Mhic, โthat drumbeat kept rolling over me like a glitchy wave, gnawing at me, like my anger that Iโd kept locked inside.โ But when she gave that beat the fuel of a drone sound, something magical happened. Suddenly, it evoked the buzz of anger that you feel in your chest when you just canโt let it out.
Then came the marimbas, layering in a tinkling rainstorm, combining with the low rumble and discord of something about to break free. Wait Up resolves in a euphoric explosion with Mhicโs powerful vocal declaration, โCanโt wait up no more.โ
Wait Up leaves you wanting to hear the rest of the story of GLOW, as Mhic undertakes the slow and healing journey back to herself.
